Hershey's Chocolate Town Special Recipe

This used to be my kids favorite chocolate cake. The recipe used to be on the back of the Hershey's can, but last time I looked it wasn't there. Luckily I copied the recipe in my file so I'd have it.

Hershey's Chocolate Town Special Recipe

1-3/4 cups sugar
2/3 cup shortening
2 Eggs
1 tsp vanilla
2-1/2 cups cake flour
1-1/2 tsp baking soda
1/2 tsp. salt
1 cup buttermilk
1/2 cup cocoa
1/2 cup boiling water

Preheat oven 350. Grease and flour 2 9” cake pans. In med bowl, cream sugar and shortening until light and fluffy. Add eggs, one at a time, beating well. Add vanilla and blend well.

In another bowl sift together flour, soda, and salt. Add alternately to shortening mixture with buttermilk. Make a heavy smooth paste of cocoa and boiling water, cool slightly, and add to batter and mix well.

Pour into prepared pans and bake about 35 mins. Frost with Fluffy Cocoa Frosting.

Fluffy Cocoa Frosting
3/4 cup Hershey’s Cocoa
4 cups confectioners’ sugar
1/2 Cup butter or margarine
1 tsp Vanilla
1/2 cup milk

In medium bowl, stir together cocoa and confectioners sugar.

In another bowl, cream together part if the cocoa-sugar mixture with the butter. Blend in vanilla and half of the milk. Add remaining cocoa-sugar mixture and blend well. Add remaining milk and beat to desired spreading consistency. Additional milk may be required.
