Split Pea Soup

1 cup dried split peas
1 ham bone
3 quarts water
1 tablespoon minced onion
3 tablespoons butter
3 tablespoons flour
1 teaspoon salt
2 cups milk

Soak peas in water overnight. Drain in morning and cover with 3 quarts water. Add ham bone and onion and cook until soft. Melt butter and stir in flour until well blended and smooth. Add salt, pepper and milk and cook, stirring constantly until mixture thickens. Combine with the peas and ham. Cook until thick.
