Mile High Biscuits

3 cups all-purpose flour
1/4 cup sugar
1 tablespoon + 1 teaspoon baking powder
1/2 teaspoon cream of tartar
3/4 teaspoon salt
1/2 cup shortening
1 egg, beaten
1 cup + 2 tablespoons milk

Combine dry ingredients in a mixing bowl. Cut in shortening until mixture resembles coarse crumbs. Add egg and milk all at once and mix until dough forms a ball. Turn dough out out on a lightly floured surface and kneed 10 to 12 times. Roll out to 3/4 inch thickness; cut with floured 2 1/2 inch biscuit cutter. Place on ungreased baking sheet and frees. When biscuits are frozen, biscuits may be stored in plastic bags. To bake place on lightly greased sheet. Bake at 475 degrees for 14-15 minutes.
