Betty Crocker's Best Chocolate Cake
I have tried numerous recipes for chocolate cake, and this is by far my favorite. The buttermilk is the key ingredient; it makes a very tender and moist cake.

2 cups flour
2 cups sugar
1/2 cups shortening
3/4 cups water
3/4 cups buttermilk
1 teaspoon baking soda
1 teaspoon salt
1 teaspoon vanilla
1/2 teaspoon baking powder
2 eggs
4 ounce unsweetened, melted chocolate

Heat oven to 350?. Grease and flour cake pans. Beat all ingredients on low for 1/2 minute. Scrape bowl and beat on high for 3 minutes. Pour into pans. Bake:

45-50 minutes for oblong pan
30-35 minutes for round pans
50-55 minutes for bunt pan
Cool 10 minutes in pan before removing to rack.

You do not have to remove cake from an oblong pan. Just frost and serve from pan.

* Powdered buttermilk does not have to be mixed separately. I just add the powder with my flour and the water with the my other liquids and let it mix in the batter.
