Raisin Cake

1 cup brown sugar
1 1/2 cups water
1 cup seeded raisins
1/3 cup shortening
1/4 teaspoon nutmeg
1 teaspoon cinnamon
1 teaspoon cloves
1 teaspoon salt

Place all the above ingredients in a kettle and bring to a boil. Boil for 3 minutes. Cool, then add:

1 1/2 teaspoons baking soda
1/2 teaspoon baking powder

Sift 2 above ingredients with 2 cups flour. Stir in first mixture with a spoon.

1/2 cup nuts if desired. Bake in 8x8 pan at 350 degrees for 35 to 40 minutes. This cake stays fresh for a long time. This is over 80 years old.
