This is for Barb who was looking for a Malted Milk Ball cake. Here is the one I use.
I hope it's what you're looking for.

Malted Milk Ball Cake

1 pkg. yellow or white cake mix
1 c. malted milk balls, coarsely chopped
1/4 c. natural flavor malted milk powder
1 1/4 c. water
1/3 c. veg. oil
3 eggs

Heat oven to 350 degrees. Grease and flour a 9x13 pan (I use Bakers Joy). Mix cake mix, malted milk balls and malted powder together. Add water, oil and eggs; beat with electric mixer on low speed for 2 minutes. Pour into cake pan and bake for 32 to 35 minutes or until done.

Cool on wire rack completely before icing.

Malted Milk Frosting
1/4 c. butter, softened
2 c. powdered sugar, sifted
2 T. natural flavor malted milk powder
1 T. baking cocoa
2 T. milk (might need a bit more for spreading consistency)
1 2/3 c. coarsely chopped malted milk balls

Beat all ingredients, EXCEPT malted milk balls with electric mixer on medium speed until smooth. Frost cake then sprinkle with the malted milk balls.
Enjoy!

There will be some down on getting this newsletter sometime between August 15th and September 1st. I am moving to a house that has hopefully little or no air conditioning problems. The duplex I am living in has no air conditioning since April. Although the air conditioner was replaced with a new one several days ago, the compressor worked less than 48 hours. Living in 90-100 degree weather for months has been very uncomfortable for months. The owner of the duplex I am living in has raised the rent over $100 since April but has not repaired the air conditioner.

Angie in Ohio,
I would love your sourdough starter recipe. My oldest DS is coming home on leave in a couple of weeks and sourdough bread is one of his faves. I have tried a few starters, but never got what I was looking for.

Hello Nancy, this is for Angie in Ohio. I have been using this recipe of my Mother's for over 20 years so it is very tried and true.

Mix two cups flour, sugar and yeast. Add the warm water and let stand for 72 hours. Stir several times. Add milk, sugar and flour. Now it is ready to use. Each time you use it add 1 cup milk, 1/3 cup sugar, and 1 cup flour and let set 3 hours at room temp. Refrigerate. Always use glass jar and cheese cloth to cover.

1/2 cup sugar
1/2 cup oil
1/2 cup very warm water

To Paula, the new pre-school teacher,
Your best resource for teaching ideas is your computer. You just need to do a search for Halloween arts and crafts for pre-school children and you will find lots of helpful sites. And as Nancy says, some students are not permitted to celebrate Halloween, so think about doing a theme unit on bats (Stellaluna by Jannelle Cannon is a great book) or spiders. Your school library should have lots of age-appropriate books on those subjects. (Then you can still decorate your classroom with ?Halloween? decorations.) Also, check out the authors? websites. Many will have useful ideas for the classroom. And of course, don?t hesitate to ask your co-workers. Teachers love to share! Good luck and have a great year!

Nancy, thank you for allowing me to share some ?educational? recipes. Your site is absolutely #1.

Hi Nancy, Regarding all the ideas for Grandma Skills, what a great idea. I think this would be great as a special baby shower for the grandma to be. The ideas could be broken down into categories, and filed in a loose leaf notebook. (i.e. newborn, toddler, pre-school, etc.) this way additional ideas could be added later. My daughter works in school daycare and already has lots of craft ideas but I'm still running copies off that I think she would like.

Husband and I took supplies to the Bluestar Mothers Saturday for freedom boxes. Someone had taken a large piece of white paper, lined it length wise, painted every other line red, and the children had made a foot print across the white lines. They had also marked off the left upper corner and stamped stars. The paint looked like water based. This was dropped off to be sent overseas.

Dilled Pork Cutlets

4 boneless pork loin cutlets, pounded to 1/4-inch thickness
2 teaspoons butter
2 tablespoons brown mustard (Dijon or stoneground)
2 tablespoons lemon juice
2 teaspoons dill weed

In a small bowl, stir together mustard, lemon juice and dill weed. In
a large heavy skillet, melt butter over medium-high heat. Brush
cutlets on both sides with mustard sauce; cook quickly until browned
on both sides, turning once (about 5 minutes). Serve hot.

I use thin cutlets. They take very little time to cook. I served with rice pilaf and
steamed green beans.

Hi Nancy, thanks for this forum that has improved over the years to the spectacular site it now is, I don't know how you do it. In the Cinnamon Pickles recipe from 8 /2 & 3 it calls for 8 & 1/2 "gallons" of water.
Can this be right? Thanks again Anne

Chris in NM, Thank you so much for the crunchy top for cobbler. I will use it, but divide the cake mix maybe into fourths for a much smaller cobbler, as there are only two of us. I will make it this week end. By the way I have a Son and DIL in Albuquerque NM, near that lift that goes up that mountain. Are you near Albuquerque? Beautiful there, and that is one of the places that we are considering moving to, if the price of houses ever stabilizes.

Re: will be a new pre-school teacher in a few days. Paula

Paula, last year I bought flat foam pumpkin shapes at Michael's craft store, and glitter glue pens to go with them. My daughter ( then a bit over 3 ) made jack o lantern faces on all the shapes, in all different expressions. Might make a good segway into a discussion on feelings...based on the faces. The foam pieces were cheap, as were the glitter pens. We also found some stickers of eyes, noses, and mouths and stuck those onto real pumpkins to make faces. If you were to go with just a fall theme, pumpkins could be painted with designs not related to jack o lanterns too.

Paula--some ideas for Halloween: I would buy cookies in Halloween shapes then let the children frost them and decorate them. Use choc. chips, sprinkles, etc....another thing was to have them take turns wrapping each other up in (cheap) toilet paper. I usually would do teams and see who could be a 'mummy' first. I also, would go to the dollar store and see what they had. Usually they would have foam stickers and foam squares and I would punch a hole on the top and have them write something cute on the front in market and then decorate with the foam stickers then use yarn or ribbon to hang. You can also find a lot on the internet. I would just make coloring sheets, word searches, or Halloween bingo. I would take candy corn and put them in a jar and have them guess how many are in there. The winner gets to take the jar home! Have the children vote on who has the best Halloween costume and give them a ribbon (usually can fine these at the dollar store too!) I have done all of these at one time or another being a room mom at school and they are all great fun.
Good luck. Dawn EP, IL

Hi,

Good morning Nancy!
For Roberts wife in Ohio in the 8/2-3 newsletter saying her Zucchini Bars had a good flavor but they came out too dry and wanted to know why. I don?t know ? mine always come out nice and moist. I always use frozen/thawed zucchini and don?t squeeze the moisture out. If I use fresh shredded zucchini, it is always very moist, and I always use extra large eggs. Maybe you baked it a little longer than it calls for? Does anyone else have any ideas?
Chris in NM

Thank you Sandy in Iowa! We really like that dish, too.

For Mary, from Newton Falls, Ohio looking for an old fashioned method of plain old pickled green beans, in the same newsletter, go to this site http://www.freshpreserving.com/pages/recipe_search/181.php. I didn?t post any recipes from here, because at this point, I am not sure if we can post from Ball Canning. I saw lots of ideas and not just for canning! Good luck!

I found this recipe in my Food and Family Magazine by Kraft. Didn't change much about it. This is how I made it. It was not only good but it was pretty too. As a side I drained off a can of black beans, mixed about a cup of shredded Mexican cheese and maybe 1/2-cup salsa in it and mixed well. . Black Bean Salad.

Taco Pie

1-lb lean ground beef
1-pg taco seasoning mix
1/2-cup water
4-flour tortillas (each one cut into fourths)
1-cup thick and chunky salsa
1-cup shredded Mexican cheese
1-cup shredded lettuce
4-green onions, chopped (tops and bottoms)
1 large red ripe tomato, chopped

Prepare the beef as directed on the taco seasoning mix packet. Drain off and put ? the meat into the bottom of a glass pie dish. On top of that put 8 pieces of the cut up tortillas. Top the tortilla with the rest of the meat and then the remaining pieces of the tortillas. Top the ?pie? with salsa, shredded lettuce, tomatoes and chopped onions. Serves 6-8

I made this for dinner tonight and the family enjoyed it. It was aromatic while cooking, beautiful for serving up and quite tasty. It is an Ellie Krieger recipe. I altered it just bit for my family?s taste and it was just great. I would make this for company.

Tuscan Roasted Chicken and Vegetables
3-large red ripe tomatoes, coarsely chunked up
2-large zucchinis, sliced into 4" strips
4 leeks (bulbs only) cleaned and chopped into about 1" pieces
olive oil
kosher salt
4-bone-in chicken breast halves
6-cloves of garlic, pressed
zest from 2 lemons
juice from 2 lemons
freshly ground black pepper
freshly ground garlic pepper
1-tspn dried rosemary

Preheat oven to 375 degrees. Place prepared tomatoes, zucchinis, and leeks in roasting pan and sprinkle with olive oil to coat and salt to taste. Toss with hand to be sure all is mixed well. Add the chicken breasts to the pan. In a small bowl mix some more olive oil, salt and remaining ingredients to make a paste. Rub 1/4 of the total paste into each chicken breast. Roast in preheat oven uncovered fro 40 minute. Remove from oven; stir veggies and return to oven for additional 40 minutes. Serves 4.

Hi Nancy and everyone. Been so busy with gardening and helping out my daughter with our new grand baby that I am behind in reading the newsletters. Sue asked about ways to make tasty cucumbers in the July 25 newsletter and I would like to share a few of our favorite ways ( besides just eating them picked off the vine--yum) Slice cucumbers in rounds about 1/4 inch thick, as many as you want. Put sour cream in a small bowl and mix in sugar until slightly sweet. Pour this over the cucumbers and mix . Put in fridge for an hour and them serve. This is my DH's favorite way to eat them. Due to diet needs, I now use fat free sour cream and Splenda and he still loves them.

I mix apple cider vinegar with sugar and pour over cucumbers and let marinate in this mixture for an hour or two in the fridge. I often add sliced sweet onions to this also. I now use Splenda in this. Very good.

We often use Italian salad dressing like you said you do, Sue, but next time mix in some mayonnaise with the salad dressing to make a creaming Italian dressing for your cucumbers. My son's favorite.

Hope this gives a few new ideas, Sue.

Blessing to you, Nancy. You are so very special to us all.
Ginny Lee-upstate NY.

This is for Boots in Va.....I don't have the Pasta and More, but I did buy the Fasta Pasta Microwave pasta cooker from QVC last year and I LOVE IT!! No more having to bring a big pot of water to a boil to cook pasta. YES! What a time saver!

No matter what type of pasta I cook in It, it always comes out perfect every time.
I had several of my friends to get it, and they have all been impressed with it. I just gave one to my daughter-in-law and am waiting to hear what she thinks. She hates having to heat up a big pot of water for pasta, so I know she's going to love it!

I had a friend visiting from Italy recently, and when I showed it to him he just shook his head and said "you Americans and your gadgets".....well let me tell you when he tasted the pasta that I cooked in it he was amazed. We didn't have time to order him one before he left, but when he comes back in a few months I'll have it here waiting for him.

The price for the one I bought was very reasonable is was about $20.00 and you got 2 of them.

Nancy,
Doris from S. Indiana asked what to do for roses. I don't grow them but my dil does and she uses miracle grow around them real often. and she adds blood meal around them too. just a little around the plants. I remember worked for a doctor that grew the most beautiful roses I ever saw. he would take blood from the hospital lab and bury around his roses. not being able to do that any more you could just use the blood meal. you can buy it at the feed stores, she is having trouble with Japanese beetles she catches them in a plastic bag to kill them and then she uses the blood meal. she has real pretty roses and they bloom all the time. good luck. Sue from Ga.

To Betty in Ga.. my condolences to you on the passing of your beloved hubby.
